After studying such arts as Kung-Fu, Shotokan, Ju-jitsu and Tae Kwon Do; Sabum Nim Brown joined HWA RANG DO as a freshman at Syracuse University in 1976. Upon graduation in 1980 with a BFA in Film, he went to Los Angeles. While there he trained at the World Hwa Rang Do Headquarters. In 1982 he returned to New York City.

In 1979, Sabum Nim had suffered a major setback; he severely aggravated a now chronic injury. (Years before he ripped his groin muscle). Now this injury hindered his training. However he did continue and in 1982 he was able to begin teaching classes in Manhattan while also pursuing his career in TV and film. During this time he worked on such projects as OFF-BEAT, the EXTERMINATOR II, FRIGHT HOUSE and the series the EQUALIZER to name just a few.

In 1987 Grandmaster Yum arrived in New York. Sabum Nim Brown worked very closely with him, helping to establish the EAST COAST WORLD HWA RANG DO ASSOCATION. Kuksa Nim also "fixed" his leg, but he informed him that he had to return to beginner (white belt) level again. Sabum Nim agreed and became one of Grandmaster Yum’s 1st group of students and U.S.A. black belts. Sabum Nim Brown worked very hard and soon regained his original degree.

C. M. Brown (C.M. Griffin) is not only a martial arts instructor, he is also a successful director, "Action Director" and writer. He currently writes the column "THE LAST WORD" in Tae Kwon Do Times magazine.
